During the period of 1515-18, Guru Nanak Dev was returning to Punjab through Srinagar and he thought of resting at Leh in between. According to a local legend,  a wicked demon lived in the area those days who used to terrorize people. They prayed to God to end their misery. The Guru heard the woes of people and decided to settle down for a while where the demon lived. Guru ji blessed the people with sermons and locals felt safe in his shadow.
