Gurudwara Patthar Sahib – The miracle story

Gurudwara pathat sahib - travel story

The story of the differently named holy shrine is an interesting one:

During the period of 1515-18, Guru Nanak Dev was returning to Punjab through Srinagar and he thought of resting at Leh in between. According to a local legend,  a wicked demon lived in the area those days who used to terrorize people. They prayed to God to end their misery. The Guru heard the woes of people and decided to settle down for a while where the demon lived. Guru ji blessed the people with sermons and locals felt safe in his shadow.

Seeing this, the demon got into a rage and decided to kill Guru Nanak Dev. One morning when Guru ji was sitting in meditation, the demon pushed a large pathhar (boulder), down from the hilltop, with the intention of killing him. The boulder when touched Guru ji’s body, softened like warm wax and came to a halt against his back and he kept on meditating. The demon came down and seeing that nothing has happened to him, tried to push the boulder with his right foot, but as it had the softness, his foot got embedded in it. His foot had left the impression in the stone. The demon realized his own powerlessness in comparison to the spiritual power of the great Guru. He fell at the feet of Guru Nanak Dev. Guru Sahib advised him to lead a life of a noble person. This changed the life of the demon and he treated people very kindly then onwards.

The pathhar pushed down by the demon, with the imprint of the body of Guru Nanak Dev and the footprint of the demon, is at present on display in Gurdwara Pathar Sahib. Thousands of devotees visit the holy shrine to have a look at the originally preserved boulder (pathhar).
